Purpose and Vision

The purpose of the Africa Middle Market Fund is to enable investors to participate in two of Africa's leading emerging markets for 1) wealth creation and 2) social impact.  This will help “mainstream” Africa for wider international investors while building a vital middle class of producers and consumers.

AMMF works with promising firms to generate financial returns and social benefits to propel the enterprises toward increased profitability, management integrity, community impact and ultimately engagement with the global economy.

Vision

The Vision of the Fund is to create a portfolio of 27-33 robust enterprises serving mostly domestic markets, with some exports, in 2-5 countries with positive business environments, employing thousands of well-skilled employees, and having a significant multiplier effect in their communities.

We are pursuing this by serving the "middle market" – often referred to as the “missing middle” because it is the least served, as depicted in this graphic.

The middle market represents 80% of Africa’s economy: in enterprises employing between 10 and 1000 workers¹. These enterprises are:

  • The least served
  • The most dynamic
  • Where the most growth, innovation and future middle class consumers will emerge
